At the last regular meetings of the Post and Auxiliary it was voted that there will be no meetings in January and February.  The weather is usually too bad during these months and not enough members show up to even have a quorum.

Memorial Day events of 2008 appeared to be better than ever. The schedule started with the parade led by Post 167 of the American Legion beginning at the bus garage. All participants marched from the school grounds along Maple Avenue and down Main Street toward Paige Cemetery. They stopped at the memorial on Main Street while Post Commander Sam Early placed a wreath at the memorial.

The principal ceremony was held at the memorial where the entrance roads meet on Paige Cemetery. Harry "Sonny" Triebe acted as master of ceremonies. Commander Early conducted the Legion ceremony introducing Chaplin John Wall who led the prayer.

Guest speaker was Town of Colchester Supervisor, Bob Homovich. Bob spoke of the sacrifices our servicemen and women and their families made for freedom. We have many freedoms to be thankful for including freedom to live and work where we wish as well as freedom of speech and those we usually think about. A very special treat this year was "The Gettysburg Address" recited from memory by Jim Wheeler. The Downsville band played some patriotic numbers. The traditional Ceremony was completed with a second special number. Emily Barnes, a junior member of the American Legion Auxiliary led the singing "God Bless America".

Floats and bicycles were judged at the Legion Hall with the following winners: bicycles: first - Emily Barnes, second - Tiffany Leone and third - Whitney Felter; floats were: first - Cub Scouts, second - Terry Clove 4-H Club and third - Girl Scouts.

Post 167 served light refreshments to all participants. Thank you to Paula Brown of Catskill Country Market, who made the doughnuts.

Squadron #167 of the sons of the American legion sold barbecued chicken and dinners at the Legion Hall. Many purchased their picnic lunches or took some home for supper. As a result, the barbecue was a great success.

Thank you to all.
